Off-road to the Pacific Beaches
|
|
This
tour requires good on- and off-road skills, as well as stamina
on the motorcycle, as we will be riding 10-11 (!) hours and close
to 200 miles. It is the most you can get out of Costa Rica in
a single day, as it takes us from San José over the Western
mountain range all the way down to the Pacific Coast and back.
We leave San José at 7:00am, heading westbound one of
the major highways. After approx. 15 km we pass the picturesque
town of Ciudad Colón. Right after the city limits, we begin
to climb a mountain range on a well maintained asphalt road. For
the next 20 km, on curve ends where the next one begins as the
road winds the mountains, giving us breathtaking views over the
Central Valley and its volcanoes on one side and a majestic mountain
range on the other side. On the highest point of our trip, we
pass the town of Puriscal, located on a mountain rim at an altitude
of approx. 5,000ft.
Shortly
afterwards, the road changes from asphalt to gravel and the descent
down to the Pacific Coast begins. From this point, we can take
several routes for different skill levels. But even if we take
the "easy" route, some off-road skills are required
as some stages are fairly steep, others can get really muddy.
We pass many different vegetation zones, from the windy mountain
range down to the hot jungle of the pacific coast. At lunchtime,
we reach the tiny village of Playa Bandera, which consists of
only a few houses and its own 10 mile beach, where we'll have
the fresh catch of the day for lunch at a typical restaurant directly
at the seafront. As you get to Playa Bandera only if you find
your way through a huge labyrinth of palm-plantations, there are
hardly ever any tourists. So after lunch, the beach is all ours
to enjoy on the motorcycles.
Around
2 PM we will start returning to San José on a route that
offers many breathtaking views and landscapes. First we ride northbound
along the Pacific Coast passing the town of Jaco and reaching
the famous Tarcoles River, where we will see the largest wild
crocodile colony of Costa Rica. Shortly afterwards, the road starts
to wind up the mountains and once again, it is a paradise for
curve-lovers. We take a final break at a cozy coffee shop with
a scenic view over the coastal line, before we finally return
to San José at around 6PM.
