Poas Volcano & La Paz Waterfalls

 You
have some street-riding skills and would like to take a scenic
tour around San José and to the peak of the Poas volcano
and the beautiful La Paz Waterfall Gardens? Leaving San José over
the famous Pan Americana highway, we soon pass the town of Alajuela
to go onto smaller roads, winding through large coffee and flower
plantations. As we climb the 2.704m high volcano, we enjoy beautiful
views over the Valle Central (Central Valley) and San José.
The final 500m we have to leave our bikes behind and walk to the
edge of the majestic crater. You can smell the sulfate-fumes escaping
the steaming crater and on clear days, you can see the green lagoon
deep down in its center.
 We
go back to our bikes and after a short ride we stop at a small
restaurant for a coffee. From there, we ride for about an hour
over smaller asphalt roads to reach our next target, the wonderful
Waterfall Gardens of La Paz, which we will visit and where we
will have lunch. The La Paz Waterfall Gardens not only comprise
5 magnificent waterfalls in a breathtaking natural surrounding,
but also houses the largest enclosed butterfly observatory in
the world. Four kilometers of paved trails lead us to several
Viewing Platforms at or behind the waterfalls. We will also explore
the Hummingbird Garden and the Orchid Garden. Afterwards we will
go back to San José, on a different scenic route.
Because of upcoming clouds in the afternoon, you should start
this tour very early in the morning.
